Environmental Branding and Mural Design
Environmental Mural Design & Interior Branding
Client: Amazon Distribution Center
Scope: Vestibule + Interior Operational Walls
Role: Lead Designer, Mural Artist, Environmental Graphics
Case Study
Project Overview
Amazon commissioned a large-scale mural and interior environmental graphic system to enhance visual cohesion and employee experience across a distribution center’s vestibule and interior workspaces. The goal was to transform expansive, industrial interiors into a more engaging, human-centered environment while maintaining clarity, safety, and operational flow.
Challenge
Distribution centers are typically dominated by neutral surfaces, high ceilings, and utilitarian layouts. The challenge was to introduce a visually dynamic system that:
Created continuity between entry points and interior spaces
Scaled effectively across large wall expanses
Energized the environment without distracting from productivity
Aligned with Amazon’s culture of innovation and efficiency
The design needed to work within an active facility, respecting circulation paths, visibility, and safety requirements.
Design Approach
The mural system was designed as a cohesive visual language rather than isolated artworks. Flowing forms, bold color fields, and rhythmic movement were used to guide the eye through the space, visually connecting the vestibule to interior zones. The compositions balance structure and energy—providing movement without visual overload.
Key considerations included:
High-contrast color palettes for visibility in large spaces
Modular compositions adaptable to varied wall lengths
Clear spatial transitions between functional zones
A visual tone that supports morale in a high-output workplace
The artwork was carefully integrated around architectural features, doors, and equipment to ensure continuity without disrupting operations.
Execution
The murals were executed directly on-site in phases to accommodate daily facility operations. Close coordination with site leadership ensured minimal disruption while maintaining precision and consistency across multiple interior locations.
Outcome
The completed installation transformed the distribution center into a more cohesive and engaging environment. The murals establish a strong visual identity throughout the space, improving wayfinding cues, reducing visual monotony, and contributing to a more positive employee experience from entry through daily workflows.
This project demonstrates how environmental graphic design can elevate large-scale industrial spaces—using art and design as functional tools to support culture, cohesion, and engagement within corporate environments.
